Loraine's debut was scheduled on September 26, 2009. As we all know by now, it was the fateful day when typhoon Ondoy devastated part of Luzon and dumped an equivalent of a month's rainfall in just five hours.

The debutante and her family was stranded on the way to Manila from their hometown in San Pablo City, Laguna. Good thing we were advised that the debut was cancelled that day or we'll stranded ourselves on the way there, as well!

The half-Indian, half-Filipino bride nicknamed Inday and the groom who has an identical twin are perfect foils for each other. She is vivacious and he is shy, she's morena and he's fair. They delighted the guests with a swing dance to the tune of Michael Buble's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", choreographed by the bride herself just the night before.

The wedding was filled with doctors, both of the PHDs and MDs kind because she's the daughter of an Indian scientist and the couple are both doctors. The emcee quipped that the Pag-ibig Hall of Villa Escudero was filled with doctors, he wondered who were manning the hospitals in San Pablo that night!

Arvin and Shai are both new doctors having their residency in different hospitals. They're so unassuming they told me they don't really know what to do in this prenuptial pictorial. Most couples whose weddings I photographed also have me as photographer for their firstborns' first birthday parties. What's memorable about this kid's first birthday in '02 was it was on our schedule (my dad and I) several weeks before.

But two days before the event, my father passed away. I used to sing for a living, too, and as a showbusiness saying goes, "the show must go on." This applies to photographers, as well. I just packed my camera bag after the interment and headed straight to a birthday party.

Time flies, it's been six years. Hope I still can cover this kid's wedding!

Villa Escudero
A Dutch-Filipino wedding. Dennis is an accountant and Lea, a nurse based in London. Lea's a very funny girl, she kept her groom and all the people around her, including this photographer entertained by her antics from the preparation to the dinner party. Together with typical Villa Escudero festive atmosphere, this wedding was truly a fiesta!

Tribute to my dad

Photography means a lot of different things to different people. To my father, it was his life. He wanted his children to share that passion. One child did, my brother, who had taken photography like a duck takes to water. But my dad had his sights dead set on another child, me. I was into all things artistic then except for photography.

He had his wish of having one of his daughters take photography only when his health started to fail. There were weddings to shoot and my brother was in another country so that left me with no other choice.

He had managed to instill that love for photography in the few short years we had as photographer and assistant and as fierce competitors (as to whose photographs the newlyweds will choose to enlarge and had most images taken included in the album).

But five years ago, he passed away. We had a wedding scheduled the month he died and all I could say then was, "Who's gonna be with me in that wedding?"

I want to remember my father when he was at his happiest moments - taking pictures, clowning around, showing off his Nikons, talking with other photographers, the list is endless! They were all related to photography and I am glad he had shared it with me. I may not approximate the passion he had but I can say it's also my life now and my legacy.
